Denver, CO — Between October and December 2017, Rose Community Foundation awarded 343 grants totaling over $6 million. Of this amount, $4,946,797 was awarded for 62 grants from Rose Community Foundation’s program areas to nonprofit organizations, government agencies and projects that support the well-being of the Greater Denver community. Donor-advised funds housed at the Foundation approved 281 grants totaling $1,085,199. Rose Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling over $269 million since its inception in 1995.

The Foundation’s staff and board of trustees authorized the following grants between October 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017.

PROGRAM AREA GRANTS

Aging

Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. (Denver): $50,000 to assist low-income older adults and/or disabled homeowners to remain independent by providing home modification services that improve safety, structure and/or in-home mobility.

Center for People with Disabilities (Boulder): $10,000 for the Beyond Vision Program, which assists older adults who are visually impaired or blind to remain independent.

Colorado Department of Human Services – Colorado Commission on Aging (Denver): $200,000 for the thirteenth year of Senior Source, a multi-media information and education campaign designed to bring resources to older adults and their caregivers.

Colorado Gerontological Society (Denver): $46,500 to provide Medicare, Medicaid and benefits counseling to Medicare beneficiaries and low-income individuals over age 60, including information, education, screening, application assistance and enrollment assistance.

• Colorado Nonprofit Development Center (Denver):
  $45,000 for Benefits in Action to help low-income older individuals navigate, access and utilize the health and care benefits they need to live independent, self-sufficient lives while staying in their homes as long as possible.
• $25,000 to support the ongoing efforts of Boomers Leading Change.

Easter Seals Colorado (Lakewood):

• $15,000 to consolidate and distribute information about respite care into an easy to understand toolkit for family caregivers in the Denver metro area.
• $50,000 over two years to support the Rehabilitation Services and Stroke Recovery Day Program, which assists stroke survivors to regain skills and improve their health and quality of life.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver):

• $150,000 to launch a new initiative, Changing the Narrative, an awareness and communications campaign to shift the perception about aging that results in an age-integrated society.
• $4,800 for consulting support to grow the Changing the Narrative initiative by securing additional funding partners.

Seniors’ Resource Center (Denver): $5,000 for Dementia Friendly Denver to provide information and tools about dementia to support caregivers in the Greater Denver community.

The Center for Trauma & Resilience (Denver): $15,000 over 18 months to support 24-hour crisis intervention, trauma recovery, personalized crime prevention and safety planning and other care management services for older individuals who are the victims of crime in Denver County.

Child and Family Development

Bright By Three (Denver): $20,000 to support the parenting and Bright by Text programs over eight months to encourage caregivers to engage with young children more frequently and help them understand how they can best support young children’s development.

Clayton Early Learning (Denver): $10,000 to support state-level early childhood advocacy efforts and leverage a local match for the 2017-2018 Alliance for Early Success work.

Colorado Center on Law and Policy (Denver): $10,000 to update the Colorado Self-Sufficiency Standard and Overlooked and Undercounted: Struggling to Make Ends Meet in Colorado report.

Colorado Children’s Campaign (Denver): $100,000 in general operating support over two years (jointly funded with $100,000 from our Education and $100,000 from our Health program areas) to support the Campaign’s work in K-12 education, early childhood and health care.

Families First (Denver): $20,000 over two years to support the Parents as Teachers program, which provides support for parents so they feel empowered to keep their children safe in their own homes and families.

Jeffco Public Schools (Golden): $40,000 over two years to support the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) Home Visitation Program, which provides age-appropriate learning activities for children, coaches and parents to become partners in their children’s education and employ effective parenting skills.

Jeffco Schools Foundation (Lakewood): $20,000 over two years to support the Parent Child Home Program (PCHP), which aims to change the school readiness and preparedness of young children through home visitation services focused on literacy based tactics and modeling for both the parent and child.

Metropolitan State University (MSU) of Denver Foundation (Denver): $20,000 over two years for the Family Literacy Program, which works to break the cycle of poverty and low literacy by providing intergenerational, unified family literacy services for the most vulnerable families.

Parent Possible (Denver): $70,000 to support the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY), Parents as Teachers (PAT) and Vroom programs, as well as Parent Possible’s role in coordinating the Foundation’s Home Visiting Program Cluster, through two years of general operating support.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver):

• $352 to produce a report on Denver’s 2 Generation Conference, highlighting discussion points, emerging themes and key recommendations going forward.
• $75,000 over three years to sustain the Denver Opportunity Youth Initiative, a collective impact initiative led by Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce focused on supporting young people ages 18 to 24 who are both out of school and out of work (jointly funded with our Education program area).

Roots Family Center (Denver): $40,000 to support the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) and Parents as Teachers (PAT) programs through two years of general operating support.

Education

Colorado Children’s Campaign (Denver): $100,000 in general operating support over two years (jointly funded with $100,000 from our Child and Family Development and $100,000 from our Health program areas) to support the Campaign’s work in K-12 education, early childhood and health care.
Colorado Latino Leadership, Advocacy & Research Organization (CLLARO) (Denver): $25,000 to build internal capacity for increased education advocacy programming.

Denver Public Schools Foundation (Denver): $76,500 to support the development and launch of the Montbello Children’s Network, a new innovation management organization that will replicate the successful school model at McGlone Elementary at nearby John H. Amesse Elementary starting in fall of 2019.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver):

• $10,000 for consulting support for strategy and coordination of the Colorado Education Organizing Funders Collaborative.

University of Colorado Denver, School of Public Affairs (Denver): $750 for the February First Friday Breakfast panel on gentrification in Denver highlighting the Strengthening Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI) and its efforts to integrate Denver Public Schools.

Westminster Public Schools Foundation (Westminster): $25,000 to support increased participation in concurrent enrollment and ASCENT programs.

Health

The Center for African American Health (Denver): $100,000 over two years to promote healthy lifestyles and behaviors among Denver area African Americans through general operating support.

Center for Health Progress (Denver): $112,500 to support advocacy efforts on behalf of health equity in Colorado through 27 months of general operating support.

The Chanda Plan Foundation (Lakewood): $36,420 to determine the viability and sustainability of providing primary care services at the Chanda Center for Health.

Colorado Association for School-Based Health Care (Denver): $21,875 to identify schools and school districts that would most benefit from the opening of new school-based health centers.

Colorado Center on Law and Policy (Denver): $225,000 over 27 months to support health policy leadership and advocacy on behalf of Colorado’s poor, working poor and other vulnerable populations.

Colorado Children’s Campaign (Denver): $107,900 in general operating support over two years (jointly funded with $100,000 from our Education and $100,000 from our Health program areas) to support the Campaign’s work in K-12 education, early childhood and health care and to support the All Kids Covered Coalition planning process.

Colorado Community Health Network (Denver): $112,500 over 27 months to improve access to and retention of affordable health coverage for low-income families, their children and other Coloradans.

Colorado Fiscal Institute (Denver): $25,000 for research on the economic benefits of safety net programs, such as Medicaid and the Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+).

Colorado Nonprofit Development Center (Denver): $174,350 over two years for Colorado Children’s Healthcare Access Program to integrate access to behavioral health services into children’s primary care settings and develop the Health for Every Child Framework.

Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR) (Denver): $50,000 to help Spanish-speaking immigrant parents and family members talk about sex and sexuality, healthy relationships and positive body image.

Dental Aid (Lafayette): $118,240 over three years to further develop the community-based dental services program and the provision of tele-supported hygiene services in Boulder Valley School District.

LiveWell Colorado (Denver): $50,000 for the expansion of Double Up Food Bucks, a program that promotes the consumption of fruits and vegetables among low-income populations.

Mental Health Center of Denver (Denver): $30,000 to enhance faith and spiritual well-being outreach to refugee and immigrant communities in Denver.

Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics (Denver): $50,000 to implement a communications plan to reach and serve more patients in key communities and expand the RMYC’s funder base.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver):

• $4,000 for consulting support to ensure all Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) members have timely, accurate and helpful information needed in the event that Colorado can no longer operate the CHP+ program due to lack of federal funds.
• $10,667 to support the Center for Health Progress’ role in coordinating and raising the collective voice of small community safety net clinics to inform policy decisions.
• $12,450 for consulting support to create a business model and report with a recommended path forward to promote the sustainable adoption of health literacy practices.

Jewish Life

Boulder Jewish Community Center (Boulder): $100,000 over two years to increase the capacity to generate fundraising income with a new senior development and external engagement director.

Denver Jewish Day School (Denver): $114,872 for upgrades to administrative software and marketing materials, a new makerspace and consulting to investigate the feasibility of a new transitional kindergarten.

Jewish Federations of North America (New York, NY): $2,500 to support staff participation in professional development and leadership opportunities.

Kavod Senior Life (Denver): $78,158 to build the capacity of program evaluation efforts to collect and utilize data that will inform and improve all resident programs and services at this Housing and Urban Development housing project for low-income older adults.

OneTable Colorado (New York, NY): $200,000 over two years to promote custom, peer-led Shabbat dinner experiences for Denver and Boulder’s young adults, increasing their connection to each other and Jewish communities.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver):

• $60,000 to support a year-long Chicago-Denver Jewish Educator Community Learning Exchange, a peer-learning cohort for early childhood education (ECE) center teachers and directors in both cities.
• $1,081,252 over three years for the renewal of a multi-faceted Jewish Teen Education and Engagement Initiative designed to increase the number and diversity of Jewish teens ages 13 to18 in the Greater Denver communities participating in Jewish education and engagement experiences during middle school and high school and to deepen the quality and diversity of the experiences they are having. This grant is a partnership with Jim Joseph Foundation.

Staenberg-Loup Jewish Community Center (Denver): $137,000 for a comprehensive business planning process including a market study and communications plan.

The Wexner Foundation (New Albany, OH): $125,000 to bring The Wexner Heritage Program, a leadership development program for Jewish volunteer leaders ages 30 to 45, to Denver and Boulder in 2022.

UpStart (San Francisco, CA): $323,211 to launch a new Denver and Boulder regional innovation hub that will provide the tools, a network and resources for local organizations to learn, experiment and collaborate to deepen their impact on Jewish teens and other sectors of Jewish communities that need help to innovate.
