Rose Community Foundation Announces $12.4+ Million in Grants from Second Half of 2018

Denver, CO — Between July and December 2018, Rose Community Foundation awarded 565 grants totaling over $12.4 million. Of this amount, $5,912,771 was awarded for 132 grants from Rose Community Foundation’s program areas to nonprofit organizations and government agencies that support the well-being of the Greater Denver community. Donor-advised funds housed at the Foundation approved 368 grants totaling $3,631,874. Restricted funds housed at the Foundation awarded 65 grants totaling $2,940,417. This brings Rose Community Foundation’s 2018 grants total to $25 million; the Foundation has awarded grants totaling over $287 million since its inception in 1995.

The Foundation’s staff and board of trustees authorized the following grants between July 1 and December 31, 2018. Program grants are listed by program area and donor-directed grants are listed alphabetically.

PROGRAM AREA GRANTS

Aging

Brothers Redevelopment, Inc., $55,000 to support the Home Modification & Repair program, providing home rehab services that improve safety, structure and in-home mobility for disabled and older adult homeowners.

Changing the Narrative (fund housed at Rose Community Foundation), $180,300 to continue, refine, expand and enhance Changing the Narrative in Colorado, an awareness and communication campaign designed to shift the perception about aging that results in an age integrated society.

Coal Creek Meals on Wheels, $5,000 to support the provision of home-delivered meal programs to homebound older adults in Lafayette, Louisville, Superior and Erie.

Colorado African Organization, $15,000 to support the Elder Refugee Citizen Project in providing pro bono legal services for Naturalization with Medical Waiver applications.

Colorado Gerontological Society, $75,000 to support, in English and Spanish, Medicare and Medicaid benefits and access to health care counseling and education for low-income individuals over age 60.

Colorado Nonprofit Development Center

$75,000 to support Benefits in Action’s Health Benefit Navigation which provides access to health care for older adults with an emphasis on low income and vulnerable older adults.
$200,000 to support Boomers Leading Change in harnessing the experience, energy and conviction of adults age 50+ to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families. This includes creating healthier, better-informed, more confident healthcare consumers and improving access to healthcare for all in Metro Denver.

Cultivate, $20,000 to promote independent living of older people in Boulder and surrounding areas through Cultivate’s Safety Net Services, specifically its Carry-Out Caravan, Fix-it and Medical Mobility programs.

Denver Regional Council of Governments, $15,000 to support older adults from refugee communities with transportation to access activities of the Elder Refugee Program, and to support the Denver Regional Council of Governments and partner agency Colorado African Organization in providing options counseling and community navigation to connect participants with community resources.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of Colorado, $30,000 to support SAGE of the Rockies and Capitol Hill Care Link that provides supportive programs and services for LGBTQ and allied older adults (age 60+) in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, an area recognized by the City of Denver as a naturally occurring retirement community.

Hunger Free Colorado, $20,000 to provide low-income older adults in the metro area with connections to food resources and assistance with submitting and obtaining nutritious food resources.

Jewish Family Service of Colorado, $130,000 to support the Jay and Rose Phillips Senior Solutions Center to provide services and supports designed to help older adults and their caregivers so they are able to maintain a good quality of life, participate in their communities and maintain their independence.

Latino Community Foundation of Colorado (fund housed at Rose Community Foundation), $210,000 to support Latino Age Wave Colorado for a community-led multi-year place-based project that utilizes a Family Center Approach to aging for Latino older adults, their caregivers and the local community in Montbello.

Longmont Meals on Wheels, $25,000 to support the delivery of home delivered meals to older adults in Longmont, Lyons, Niwot and the surrounding rural areas.

Meals on Wheels of Boulder, $35,000 to support the provision of home-delivered meal programs to homebound older adults in Boulder and its social venture quiche business, Think Goodness.

National Council on Aging, $25,000 to support the National Council on Aging, in partnership with SCL Health and other community-based organizations in Colorado, in demonstrating the potential of the Aging Mastery Program® to improve the lives of older adults and their caregivers in Colorado, especially underserved populations.

Project Angel Heart, $25,000 to support the provision of home-delivered meal programs to homebound older adults in the metro Denver area.

The Senior Hub, $150,000 over 18 months to support a menu of direct services to low-income older adults living in Adams and Arapahoe counties and surrounding areas.

Spark the Change Colorado, $20,000 to support the Colorado Senior Companion Program, which provides opportunities for low-income Senior Companion volunteers to serve frail older adult clients to maintain their ability to live independently in their own homes with improved or equal quality of life for as long as possible.

Spring Institute for Intercultural Learning, $20,000 to support a Life Long Navigator project that will connect older adult refugees and immigrants to services that promote good health and prevent isolation in Denver and Aurora.

TLC Meals on Wheels, $10,000 to support the provision of home-delivered meal programs and a friendly visitor to homebound older adults in the Littleton area.

Volunteers of America Colorado Branch, $65,000 to support the provision of home-delivered meal programs to homebound older adults in the metro Denver area.

Ability Connection Colorado, $15,000 to support the implementation of a math skills intervention program as an adjunct to regular preschool education programming to counter weaknesses pertaining to mathematics education and improve proficiency in that subject area.

The Acorn School for Early Childhood Development, $5,000 to support implementation of a social emotional development curriculum, Pyramid Plus, for upcoming and existing early childhood teachers.

Bal Swan Children’s Center, $5,000 to support services to children with special needs, medical challenges and at risk of school failure, as well as early learners with typical learning styles.

The Bell Policy Center, $30,000 to support general operations, research, outreach and advocacy to address the economic mobility forces affecting Coloradans and their communities–economic inequality, shifting demographics, changing technology, and shrinking public investment–so that all children and their families have the opportunity to thrive.

Children’s Haven Child Care Center, $10,000 to support quality improvements for an early education center in Southwest Denver serving 150 low-income children.

The Children’s Museum of Denver, $10,000 to support the planning and development of two culturally responsive Early Learning Experience Galleries, which will inspire responsive adult-child interactions, scaffold caregiver knowledge and connection, and support cognitive, physical and social-emotional development for young children.

Clayton Early Learning

$75,000 to support the research and evaluation agenda designed to answer key questions regarding the efficacy of programs, curriculum and approaches.
$30,000 to conduct an environmental scan and develop a professional development plan as Clayton expands its training initiatives for early childhood educators.

Colfax Aurora Community Economic Opportunity Project, $5,000 to support a pilot group of 12-15 in-home Latino daycare providers that will form a cooperative in Northwest Aurora.

Colorado Nonprofit Development Center, $10,000 to support a feasibility study to inform Boomers Leading Change and prospective partners about the potential for well-trained older volunteers to strengthen the early child infrastructure in Metro Denver identifying needs, program opportunities and resources.

Denver Early Childhood Council, $20,000 to support the Council’s work with child care providers, policymakers, and other partners to enhance the quality and availability of child care and early education opportunities for children and families.

Denver Public Library Friends Foundation, $5,000 to support the Read Aloud Program, an early literacy program provided in low-income, often ethnically diverse neighborhoods designed to ensure that the prevalence of at-risk preschool children will enter kindergarten better prepared for continued learning and future academic and professional success.

Early Childhood Council of Boulder County, $20,000 to support systems building by acting as the backbone for the Boulder County Early Childhood Collective, providing quality improvement programs for licensed childcare and professional development.

Early Childhood Council Leadership Alliance, $50,000 to support families with young children, so they have access to high quality early learning opportunities and comprehensive physical and mental health services and supports.

Early Excellence Program of Denver, $10,000 for professional development for a center in Cole neighborhood that provides high quality early childhood programs to 80 students.

Early Milestones Colorado, $50,000 to continue to build capacity as an independent non-partisan organization helping to advance innovative solutions to improve policies and practices in early childhood in order to create lasting, positive change for children.

El Centro Amistad, $10,000 to support parenting education classes in Spanish to 160 Latinx parents at four locations in Boulder County during the 2018-2019 school year.

El Centro Humanitario Para Los Trabajadores, $10,000 to support children and families by offering early learning programs in high needs neighborhoods. The grant will contribute to five programs across Denver serving children birth to 5 and their families.

Family Star, $10,000 to support professional development for teachers and staff that serve 210 children in two center-based programs as well as a home-based program.

Florence Crittenton Services of Colorado

$30,000 to support the Student and Family Support Program and Early Childhood Education Center, which work in tandem to provide wraparound support to teen mothers and their children.
$17,000 to support the Legal Clinic that provides teen mothers with undocumented parents or family members access to immigration legal advice, services, and representation.

Friends of the Haven, $10,000 to support the Baby Haven in providing classroom and center materials, education and training for center staff and qualified substitute teachers with required background checks to maintain/exceed a Level 4 Colorado Shines rating.

The Gathering Place, $10,500 to provide administrative and capacity building support for the Denver Women’s Collaborative, a collective voice on behalf of women and girls, and their families in the Metro Denver area

Growing Home, $10,000 to support early childhood programs for low-income families with children in Adams County and the north Denver metro area.

Jefferson County Library Foundation, $5,000 to support a childhood literacy program produced year-round by Jefferson County Public Library, which helps parents/guardians introduce babies, toddlers and preschoolers to reading and literacy, helping children to become reading ready before they enter kindergarten.

Laradon, $10,000 to expand staff capacity for the Family, Infant and Toddler Program.

Little Giants Learning Center, $5,000 to serve the Commerce City community by providing quality care in a safe environment, whereby each child is enriched with experiences that are conducive to their academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural development.

Mile High Early Learning

$20,000 to support Babies Ready for College, which provides intentional support for families and caregivers to ensure they have the information, resources, and tools they need to prepare their children for school.
$25,000 to support implementation of Mile High Early Learning’s work on race and equity in early learning, specifically training and professional development for staff as they work toward equitable practices, respectful interactions and a commitment to race and equity.

Mountain View United Church, $5,000 of general operating support for the Rocky Mountain Welcome Center, an immigrant-led multi-tenant, shared space organization based in Aurora with the mission of fostering intercultural learning, understanding and integration among immigrants, refugees and Colorado residents.

New Horizons Preschool, $5,000 to support low-income, Latino children and their parents through the Parent Outreach Program which includes the Spanish Family Literacy Program, parent education programming, home visits and targeted one-on one parent outreach.

New Legacy Charter High School, $10,000 to the school’s Early Learning Center, which primarily serves pregnant/parenting teens and their children, for early childhood development and professional development of teachers and staff.

Office of the Governor, State of Colorado, $10,000 to support the match for grants from the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) for the Parents and Children Thriving Together (PACTT): Two-Generation Policy Network.

OUR Center, $5,000 to support new and existing teachers to stay up to date with the Pyramid Plus model, as OUR Center continues to aim for the highest quality rating scores.

Parent Possible, $40,000 to support continued implementation of the Vroom Colorado Strategic Plan. Vroom translates the science behind the brain’s executive functions into easy, actionable tips that encourage interaction between parents and young children to support the child’s healthy development.

Reach Out and Read Colorado, $10,000 to support the evidence-based program model working in partnership with medical providers to give new books and anticipatory guidance for parents to become their child’s first and most important teacher, enhancing developmental milestones and school readiness across 110 clinics in Metro Denver.

Sewall Child Development Center, $10,000 to support early childhood staff with ongoing coaching and training in the Pyramid Plus model that serves over 300 children in 9 preschool sites across Denver, helping a broad range of children with differing abilities

Mizel Arts & Culture Center, $80,000 to support Jewish arts and culture programs offered by JAAMM Fest (Jewish Arts, Authors, Movies & Music) to attract new audiences and for innovative strategic program development consulting for all the organization’s offerings that will result in new and improved programming, reaching broader audiences.

Rose Community Foundation, MazelTogether, $91,000 to support a strategic planning process for MazelTogether.

NONPROFIT COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Colorado Nonprofit Association, $30,000 of general operating to support the organization in leading, serving and strengthening Colorado’s nonprofit community, to improve the quality of life throughout the state.

Colorado Nonprofit Development Center, $20,000 of general operating to support a more efficient, innovative and accountable Colorado nonprofit sector through the utilization of Colorado-based, professional fiscal sponsorship.

Community Resource Center, $15,000 of general operating to support the organization in building the capacity of individuals, organizations and the nonprofit sector through comprehensive programs providing resources, education and leadership development.

Community Shares of Colorado, $10,000 of general operating to support organization-wide strategic initiatives, which work together to increase capacity for local nonprofits and extend philanthropy across Colorado through sustainability and workplace giving.

The Denver Foundation, $10,000 to support Mile High Connects’ priorities around advancing racial, economic, environmental and health equity while simultaneously addressing the most critical day-to-day challenges for low-income communities and communities of color.

Latino Community Foundation of Colorado (fund housed at Rose Community Foundation, $40,000 to support efforts to increase Latino philanthropy and funding to Latino nonprofit organizations.

Spark the Change Colorado, $10,000 of general operating to support the mission of inspiring, engaging, mobilizing and empowering individuals, communities and organizations to become a driving force for good through volunteerism and service/engagement.

COMMUNITY ACTION GRANTS

Anti-Defamation League, Mountain States Regional Office, $40,000 to support the Mountain States against Hate Coalition, whose members represent people targeted by race (African American and Latino/a), religion (primarily Muslim and Jewish), sexual orientation (LGBTQ) and gender identity, disability, and resident status and national origin (refugees and immigrants).

Center for Immigrants and Immigration Services, $15,000 to support recruitment and capacity building for the Center’s pro-bono legal program, which serves survivors of torture, asylum seekers, asylees, refugees and immigrants.

City of Denver, $5,200 to provide the 2018 match for the City of Denver’s Cities for Citizenship (C4C) “America is Home” Initiative grant, a $5 million bipartisan grant program to help municipalities and community partners encourage U.S. citizenship among eligible immigrants and increase naturalization application rates.

Colorado African Organization, $15,000 to support the Elder Refugee Citizen Project in providing pro bono legal services for Naturalization with Medical Waiver applications.

Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition

$75,000 to support year two of the CIRC initiative, Colorado Rises: a statewide communications coalition that supports impacted community members and allies who wish to become involved in the work of protecting the rights and dignity of immigrants and refugees.
$500 honorarium for participation as a panelist in Census 2020 Forum.

Denver Health & Hospitals Foundation, $10,000 to support core service provision at the Denver Health Human Rights Clinic and fulfill a matching grant requirement.

Denver Public Library, $15,000 to support programming at the New Americans Project, including the expansion of citizenship exam preparation classes to Southwest Denver, legal assistance with the citizenship application form, and cultural enrichment activities for immigrants and refugees in the Denver metro area.

Denver Public Schools Foundation, $5,000 to support programming to provide a space for African American young women to discuss the issues and challenges they face and celebrate who they are in accordance with Rose Community Foundation’s Community Action Fund focus on making Denver a safe and welcoming space for all.

ECDC African Community Center of Denver, $15,000 to support ACC’s legal program to provide low cost, high quality legal assistance to refugees and other migrants, including representing them before USCIS, as well as legal training to other staff.

Florence Crittenton Services of Colorado, $500 honorarium on behalf of Elizabeth Garner for her participation as a panelist in the Census 2020 Forum.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of Colorado, $12,500 to upgrade security surveillance system to allow The Center to continue functioning as an open-door, welcoming community center for all who seek its services

The Interfaith Alliance of Colorado, $5,000 to support a Progressive Congregation Network meeting around advocating against hate in our communities and to support the creation of fact sheets for legislators around the diversity of their constituents (race, religion, refugee or immigration status).

Matthew Shepard Foundation, $2,500 donation in recognition of the 20th anniversary and in honor of the anti-hate work the Foundation does, in conjunction with the Community Action Fund’s priority on creating a safe and welcoming space for all.

Metropolitan State University of Denver Foundation, $10,000 to assist MSU students with the costs associated with renewing Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status. Students have significant problems funding their own DACA renewals, and this status allows them to remain legally and pursue their studies in the country they know as home.

Mountain View United Church, $5,000 for general operating support for the Rocky Mountain Welcome Center, an immigrant-led multi-tenant, shared space organization based in Aurora with the mission of fostering intercultural learning, understanding and integration among immigrants, refugees and Colorado residents.

Muslim American Society Denver Chapter, $1,000 to support the 2018 Muslim Youth Empowerment Conference, which aims to empower, engage, and evolve Muslim youth through spiritual, academic, and professional development.

Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center, $20,000 to bolster and expand current service offerings for youth under age 21 who are seeking immigration relief by obtaining Special Immigrant Juvenile Status to live with nonparent caregivers.

Rose Community Foundation, Roots and Branches Foundation, $10,000 to amplify Roots & Branches Foundation’s 2018 giving in the area of immigrant and refugee support.

Shorter Community African Methodist Episcopal Church, $10,000 to support Race Talk University, a program designed to help African Americans, people of color and white people consider and dialogue around the subject of race and racist systems rooted in hate.

Together We Count (fund housed at Rose Community Foundation), $35,000 to support 2020 Census outreach and engagement across Colorado through Together We Count’s mini-grant work, which will allow organizations to prioritize census work that they believe will work best in their communities without taking away from their other organizational priorities. It will also provide TWC with on the ground information about how different groups are responding to census messaging and materials.

United for a New Economy, $10,000 to support the second cohort of the Transformative Leadership for Change Fellowship. It seeks to build a diverse peer network of Colorado leaders of color who have high-level personal and organizational capacities and identify the culture and conditions in the Colorado progressive ecosystem that support and transform leaders of color.

Village Exchange Center, $10,000 to support a range of programming, with a focus on multi-faith cross-cultural events and supporting young adults in the refugee and immigrant population.
