Rose Community Foundation Announces Grants from First Half of 2018

Denver, CO — Between January and June 2018, Rose Community Foundation awarded 561 grants totaling over $15.5 million. Of this amount, $3,639,118 was awarded for 85 grants from Rose Community Foundation’s program areas and community action fund to nonprofit organizations, government agencies and projects that support the well-being of the Greater Denver community. Donor-advised funds housed at the Foundation approved 334 grants totaling $5,880,399. Restricted funds housed at the Foundation awarded 37 grants totaling $2,950,671. Rose Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling over $284 million since its inception in 1995.

The Foundation’s staff and board of trustees authorized the following grants between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2018.

*Program grants are listed by program area and donor-directed grants are listed alphabetically. Locations indicate the organization’s headquarters, not necessarily the geographic area served.

PROGRAM AREA GRANTS

Aging

Colorado Nonprofit Development Center (Denver): $40,000 to provide a menu of services including information and referral, transportation and in-home supportive services that promote independent living of older people in Douglas County.

Encore.org (San Francisco): $350 in annual dues for National Encore Network to connect and support members with educational tools to promote engaging encore talent in local communities.

Grantmakers in Aging (Arlington, VA): $3,700 annual dues for access to resources and tools to keep members informed of trending issues and programs that impact the field of aging through philanthropy.

Jewish Family Service of Colorado (Denver): $10,000 to support services for refugees and immigrants through the International KidSuccess, Refugee Mental Health, Russian Mental Health, Iraqi Womens’ Wellness Group and Serving Our Survivors programs.

Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains (Denver): $15,000 to support care management services for low-income older adults in metro Denver.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver): $8,000 for the Senior Law Handbook, a 500 page reliable and recognized source of information for those seeking legal and financial resources specific to aging issues.

Senior Support Services, Inc. (Denver): $25,000 to support for a multi-service day center for low-income and homeless older adults in downtown Denver.

Child and Family Development

Center for Work Education and Employment (Denver): $20,000 to support the Career Readiness program, which provides job training and wraparound services to low-income parents in the Denver metro area, guiding them out of poverty to self-sufficiency and stability for their families.

Community Action Development Corporation (Boulder): $8,500 to support families/individuals with low income (125% of poverty) move closer to self-sufficiency by connecting them with middle class volunteers to work on a variety of goals (employment, education, organization, etc.) set by the families/individuals themselves.

Denver Asset Building Coalition (Denver): $20,000 to provide free tax preparation, financial education, and financial services through accessible sites in Denver to help the underserved build for the future and become economically stable. 

El Centro Humanitario Para Los Trabajadores (Denver): $20,000 to support programs that connect immigrant parents of young children to resources, workforce development trainings and a network of support as they increase their capacity for economic opportunity. Also works to unite immigrant parents to address workplace discrimination through prevention, action and awareness.

Emily Griffith Foundation (Denver): $30,000 to support Emily Griffith Technical College parents as students by providing stipends to help these students overcome challenges that come with being a parent, and to support a student advocate to help these students complete their postsecondary training and obtain viable employment.

Family Resource Center Association (Denver): $265,000 to strengthen the statewide network of 29 family resource centers in 59 Colorado counties which provide comprehensive community-based supports to improve the lives of individuals and families.

Family Tree (Wheat Ridge): $10,000 to support Family Tree’s Housing and Family Stabilization Services division. This division provides crisis intervention, case management, emergency shelter and supportive services including employment guidance to break cycles of poverty and crisis, helping families become economically independent.

Jeffco Public Schools (Golden): $50,000 to support the increased quality of early education in Jeffco as well as increase access for families to participate in preschool, in collaboration with Early Milestones.

Mi Casa Resource Center (Denver): $30,000 to support, train, and connect low-income and low-skilled individuals to jobs with career pathways that pay a living wage. Aside from low-income status, 84% of career participants are women and parents of dependent children.

Mpowered (Denver): $15,000 to support financial coaching for families with young children to empower them to transform their financial futures and establish self-sufficiency.

Parent Possible (Denver): $6,500 to support the Home Visiting Cluster to identify key problems facing home visitation in order to create a stronger framework for systemic change through home visiting.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver): $2,300 to support Child and Family Development cluster intermediaries in receiving training on being a network leader.

Warren Village (Denver): $45,000 to support the two-generation self-sufficiency program for low income single parent families, which consists of transitional housing, quality early education and workforce development supports.

Work Options for Women (Denver): $20,000 to support the Culinary Skills Job Training Program, which provides training in culinary skills, job-readiness skills, life skills and ongoing support designed to help very-hard-to-employ individuals obtain and retain employment and pursue a permanent career.

WorkLife Partnership (Denver): $20,000 to support WorkLife Partnership in creating socially sustainable communities and thriving workplaces in the Denver area and across Colorado by engaging employers to invest in their low-income, entry-level workers.

Education

Adams County Youth Initiative (Thornton): $25,000 for continuous improvement training and coaching for Adams County school and district leaders.

Aurora Public School District (Aurora): $2,000 to offer refugee and immigrant students a half-day summer academic program including classes related to English Language Development (ELD), ELD literacy, and ELD math.

Colorado Academy (Denver): $20,000 to support the development and execution of the first cohort of district, charter, and independent school teachers to participate in The Colorado Center for Teaching Excellence professional development.

Colorado BioScience Institute (Denver): $10,000 to support the pilot program of pre-service teachers in the Institute’s established STEM Research Experience for Teachers Program (RET). The RET program is an intensive program that places teachers in a STEM company working on real world projects in addition to 30 hours of professional development.

Denver Scholarship Foundation (Denver): $15,000 to support the exploration of a dedicated funding stream for college access and success programs.

Generation Teach (Boston, MA): $150,000 to support a 60% expansion of the Generation Teach Denver Summer Teaching Fellowship for undergraduate and high-school students and 50% increase in Generation Teach STEAM Academy for middle-school students, as well as coaching/leadership residency for professional teachers.

Grantmakers for Education (Portland, OR): $5,500 for annual dues and conference sponsorship opportunity.

HadaNõu Collective (Denver): $25,000 to support HadaNõu Collective’s impact research for the evaluation of their Centers Model.

Impact Empowerment Group (Denver): $20,000 to implement and evaluate the micro school pilot at Stedman Elementary School. The pilot program reflects a community-based approach to learning that improves outcomes for students and families, as well as incubating innovation with potential for radical change.

Jeffco Public Schools (Golden): $100,000 for the implementation of an online choice enrollment process in Jeffco Public Schools for improved equity, consistency, transparency and timeliness.

Moonshot edVentures (Denver): $75,000 to support the capacity building of new school leaders eager to launch innovative models that address students most underserved by the metro-Denver K-12 school system.

The Keystone Center (Keystone, CO): $200,000 to launch and manage the Colorado Educator Preparation Innovation (COEduPIC) scaling teacher residency pilot and teacher induction pilot planning group.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver):

  • $275,000 to support ongoing operations and efforts of Climb Higher Colorado, a coalition that works together to elevate student, family, and community voice in improving Colorado’s educational ecosystem.
  • $175,000 for the Colorado Education Organizing Funders Collaborative – a collaboration between leading education funders to help build the field of community organizers in education in both Denver and Aurora public schools.
  • $10,000 for the Innovation Schools Convening, designed to explore different models of Public Innovation Schools including lessons learned from case studies and research.
  • $61,943 for the Early Stage Leaders Learning network that aims to build the capacity of rising leaders in the out-of-school time community by providing participants with skills and training, empowering them to grow their community programs.

Health

5280 Strategies, LLC (Denver): $20,000 for a one-year contract for state-level legislative monitoring and advisory services.

Center for People with Disabilities (Boulder): $50,000 to support the transition from paper-based to electronic health records for home health services.

Children’s Hospital Colorado (Denver): $5,000 to support the cost of speaker honorariums for Colorado Health Literacy Coalition annual conference.

Colorado Nonprofit Development Center (Denver): $17,400 to support Mile High Health Alliance’s efforts to understand recent declines in clinical visits by Denver’s immigrant and refugee populations. 

Colorado Nonprofit Development Center (Denver): $27,500 to support 10.10.10 to implement a strategic communications and marketing plan to better engage a variety of audiences, including prospective stakeholders, sponsors and funders, and build a pipeline of future participants.

Jewish Family Service of Colorado (Denver): $10,000 to support services for refugees and immigrants through the International KidSuccess, Refugee Mental Health, Russian Mental Health, Iraqi Womens’ Wellness Group and Serving Our Survivors programs.

Maria Droste Counseling Center (Denver): $30,000 support integrated behavioral health care services.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver):

  • $35,000 Health Advocacy Leadership Mini-Grants to support leadership development for new leaders of Health Program Area advocacy grantees.
  • $1,000 to support the State Innovation Model’s 2018 convening of seven workgroups to share ideas, challenges and solutions during a full-day meeting.

Servicios De La Raza (Denver): $75,000 for the launch of a health advocacy training program for monolingual Spanish speakers in Aurora.

Tennyson Center for Children (Denver): $50,000 in support for No Kid Waits, a new program that seeks to quickly connect children and youth in mental health crisis to services.

Zero to Three (Washington D.C.): $1,667 to co-fund sponsorship of Zero to Three’s Annual Conference in Denver in October 2018 with colleague foundations.

Jewish Life

Denver Academy of Torah (Denver): $150,000 to support the purchase and installation of a preformed building so this modern Orthodox school serving grades K to12 can relocate the high school to the main campus.

Denver Jewish Day School (Denver): $152,840 to support bringing the Hebrew and Judaic studies programs into the 21st century. By implementing an integrated, innovative approach, Denver Jewish Day School can improve the experience for all students, strengthening their connection to Judaism.

Denver Mikvah Council (Denver): $21,670 to support the renovation of the women’s mikvah.

Jewish Family Service of Colorado (Denver):

  • $67,600 to build new technology capacity and identify new client database software.
  • $10,000 to support services for refugees and immigrants through the International KidSuccess, Refugee Mental Health, Russian Mental Health, Iraqi Womens’ Wellness Group and Serving Our Survivors programs.

Jewish Funders Network (New York, NY): $2,500 for membership in this community that grows the size and impact of Jewish philanthropy.

JPRO Network (New York, NY): $750 for membershipin this organization that connects, educates, inspires, and empowers professionals working in the Jewish nonprofit sector.

JTown (Greenwood Village): $25,000 for this new Jewish organization in south Denver to grow opportunities for Jewish people to connect and create community through social activities, teen youth group, alternative worship experiences and meaningful social action projects.

Merkaz Torah v’Chesed (Denver): $12,000 to support a three-year strategic plan to assess organizational structure and grow programming and fundraising capacity.

Ramah in the Rockies (Denver): $250,000 to rebuild of the lodge and administrative facilities lost in an electrical fire at this 360-acre residential Jewish camp surrounded by the Pike National and San Isabel National Forests.

Rose Community Foundation (Denver):

  • $87,500 over two years for the Live On | LIFE & LEGACYTM program, in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. This program provides coaching, training and incentive grants to participating organizations to promote a community-wide legacy giving program.
  • $118,424 over two years to support Rose Youth Foundation, an initiative of Rose Community Foundation, engaging 23 Jewish teens in an eight-month program to practice strategic, values based, Jewish philanthropy.
  • $6,800 for consulting services to support the Colorado Jewish Early Childhood Education Initiative as it moves to the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center.
  • $22,975 for a strategic plan for Ekar Farm to sustain its mission as a Jewish experiential education urban farm.

Staenberg-Loup Jewish Community Center (Denver):

  • $10,000 to support LGBTQ inclusion and engagement programming in the Jewish community.
  • $235,000 for the transition to become a debt-free institution, including a business plan, legal fees, and other related expenses.

Yeshiva Toras Chaim Talmudic Seminary of Denver (Denver): $49,200 for the development of a comprehensive, multi-year fundraising plan and professional coaching for new executive leadership at this residential high school and college specializing in Talmudic and Judaic studies for Jewish boys and men.

Foundation Grants

Staenberg-Loup Jewish Community Center (Denver): $3,000,000 to enable the organization to sustainably operate on a debt-free basis, make needed improvements to its infrastructure, and strengthen its programs and services.

Community Action Fund Grants

Asian Pacific Development Center (Aurora): $11,000 for a new advocacy cohort and to elevate the voices of the Asian Pacific Islander community to create positive change and counter negative rhetoric.

Catholic Charities Legal Aid Services (Denver): $15,000 to support paralegal assistance in cancellation of removal cases.

Center for Immigrants and Immigrant Services (Denver):  $10,000 to support the expansion of services to include legal and behavioral health workshops for torture survivors, asylum seekers, victims of human trafficking and other forms of human rights abuses.

Colorado Circles for Change Denver (Denver): $10,000 to expand programming that supports immigrant, first generation, and youth of color experiencing chronic stress due to negative rhetoric and new and changing policies.

The Denver Foundation (Denver): $30,000 for Denver Immigrant Legal Services Fund to provide for adults and children in Denver County during deportation proceedings.

Denver Inner City Parish (Denver): $2,000 for staff wellness and self-care.

ECDC African Community Center (Denver): $11,000 to create a Welcome Team of volunteers to quickly determine refugee and immigration community members’ needs.

El Comité de Longmont (Longmont): $10,000 to expand the case manager to full-time in order to increase the number of clients receiving reliable social, health and legal information in a culturally proficient environment.

Latino Community Foundation (Denver): $50,000 to support the Colorado Immigrant Funders Collaborative to assist immigrant-serving organizations with building capacity to support outreach, education and legal services across the state.

Lutheran Social Services of Colorado (Denver): $10,000 to build the organization’s internal framework for community engagement around resettlement, the contributions of refugees, and the impact refugees have on our economy and communities.

Mercy Housing (Denver): $10,500 to help residents of Grace Apartments and community members better understand their rights as legal permanent residents of the U.S. and what new or changing policies might mean for those still awaiting resettlement.

Mile High Ministries (Denver): $15,000 for the Justice and Mercy Legal Aid Clinic’s Juvenile Immigration Project to expand legal services for children.

Muslim Family Services of Colorado (Denver): $10,000 to help clients with emergency needs and for a project to raise awareness about the cultural diversity of the Muslim population and its emerging needs in an increasingly Islamophobic environment.

Out Boulder (Boulder Pride) (Boulder): $11,000 for staff to attend additional community meetings and training sessions and to support additional security.

Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN) (Westminster): $25,000 to provide a full-time lawyer to support children’s deportation cases.

Spring Institute (Denver): $20,000 to pay for interpretation services for RMIAN clients who are in deportation cases.

Together We Count (Denver): $10,000 to support the development of a strategic plan, critical to supporting their work leading up to the 2020 Census.
