Karen Leaffer is an attorney whose practice focuses on nonprofit law. As the managing partner of Leaffer Law Group, a boutique law firm dedicated exclusively to serving Colorado’s nonprofit community, Karen brings more than 25 years of dedication and experience in areas which directly impact nonprofit organizations and charitable foundations: corporate structure and governance, federal and state regulation of tax-exempt organizations, corporate philanthropy, fundraising, charitable giving, grantmaking and other related commercial matters. Karen formed Leaffer Law Group in 2008 after many years of practicing in two of Denver’s large firms.  She was a partner at Holme Roberts & Owen and headed the Colorado Nonprofit Law practice at Faegre & Benson.

Karen recently received the prestigious 2014 Outstanding Women in Business award from the Denver Business Journal for the field of Law. She is the managing editor and a contributing author of A Guide for Colorado Nonprofit Organizations (revised edition 2014), roles she has served since the Guide’s inception. Karen is a member of the Committee on Aging at Rose Community Foundation. Karen also currently serves as a member of the Advisory Committee on Business Entities for the Colorado Office of the Secretary of State, the Advisory Board of the University of Colorado Women’s Health Research Center, the Board of Trustees of Aspen Academy, and the Board of Directors of Space Science Institute and Continuing Legal Education in Colorado. She was past chair of the Nonprofit Entities Subsection of the Colorado Bar Association and past chair of the Tax Section.

Karen is well recognized as a leader in her field, having been listed in The Best Lawyers in America® Non-Profit/Charities Law category in consecutive years since 2007; in Super Lawyers® Non-Profit since 2006 and Law Week Colorado’s Barrister’s Best Nonprofit Attorney in 2011 and 2013. She is a well-known speaker and has published numerous articles on legal issues of importance to nonprofit organizations and serves as the editor of the firm’s nonprofit law blog at leafferlaw.com/nonprofitlawblog.

She holds a B.A. (summa cum laude) from Gonzaga University (with majors in Theology and Economics), a J.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Idaho and a LL.M (in Taxation) from the University of Denver.
